DBT Therapy for Teens



Southlake Counseling offers DBT therapy to clients in Concord, Mooresville, Davidson, and the greater Charlotte, North Carolina area. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) was developed by noted University of Washington clinician Marsha Linehan, Ph.D. Today, DBT therapy has a long and well-documented history of effectiveness in the treatment of a wide variety of issues, including but not limited to eating disorders, addictions, and mood disorders such as anxiety and depression. DBT treatment is structured to allow for both individual and group therapy and is designed as a year-long model.

The Southlake Center is pleased and proud to offer you the finest in DBT-based care in the Charlotte, NC metro area. Our professionals receive their training from Dr.Linehan’s Behavioral Tech, LLC, and have many years of solid experience in implementing results-oriented DBT-based recovery programs. Our DBT-based programs are offered on a Standard Outpatient basis. As a part of your participation, you will meet with your assigned therapist once per week, and more often as necessary. You will also attend one DBT therapy group per week, and you will have twenty-four-hour access to as-needed phone coaching for extra support.

Eight-Week Initial Commitment

When you begin your course of study in DBT, you can expect to make an initial eight-week commitment, with the option to complete the full twenty-four-week program. The twenty-four-week DBT program consists of three modules of study and skill-building, complete with twenty-four-hour access to as-needed phone support and a team-based therapeutic approach. Linehan’s research has shown that the highest rates of recovery are produced when clients complete the full twenty-four-week program twice, resulting in a year-long journey to a “life worth living.”

Four Powerful Learning Modules

In each module, you will learn skills in four core areas: Core Mindfulness, Interpersonal Effectiveness, Emotion Regulation, and Distress Tolerance. Mindfulness training equips you to take back control over your mind’s thoughts and your reactions to those thoughts. Interpersonal Effectiveness helps you develop the assertiveness to ask for
what you want and need in safe, healthy, and affirming ways. Emotional Regulation teaches you to name and experience your emotions without allowing them to overtake you. And Distress Tolerance cultivates your ability to stay present and focused for each moment of your life, regardless of what the day may bring. Southlake’s twenty-four-week program consists of three eight-week modules: Interpersonal Effectiveness, Emotion Regulation, and Distress Tolerance. Linehan’s fourth module, Core Mindfulness, is taught and practiced at the beginning and throughout all three modules.

Comprehensive & Continuous Support

Southlake’s Standard Outpatient DBT therapy program includes weekly individual therapy sessions with a DBT-trained therapist, a weekly skills-training therapy group, access to Southlake’s twenty-four-hour as-needed phone coaching, and an ongoing team-based therapeutic approach.

The Southlake Center treatment facility in Davidson, NC offers several content-rich DBT-based therapeutic support groups. Whether you are a participant in our Standard Outpatient DBT therapy program, or one of our DBT-based eating disorders programs, you are warmly invited to enroll in the eight-week DBT therapy group of your choice.
